This "EJ" home (so named because Endicott Johnson Corporation shoe manufacturers enjoyed a huge success and worker loyalty in Endicott NY partially due to of their building of many homes for loyal workers during the first half of the last century-all had similar floorplans) experienced a bad remodel thirty years ago. Our clients had floors that sagged to the middle of the two story addition and dark, poorly planned cabinets that sucked up way too much valuable light and workspace. The floor in the middle of the addition had to be torn up to receive major structural changes and reinforcements by adding concrete piers and underpinning. The header over the sliding door was never built to carry the weight it had to with the second story bearing walls over it. We built a custom header and brought attention to the structure rather than trying to hide it. Our client found one more place to decorate for Christmas! The mass of the doorway is balanced by the brick fireplace wall and the flanking tall cabinets on the opposite wall. New maple cabinets by Hagerstown Kitchens complete the very important part of this home, the kitchen. Custom wine racks, warming and bread drawers, and a large food file cabinet making meal planning easy and efficient were priorities. Bookshelves tucked under one section of the island hold a large collection of favorite cookbooks. Our client loves the holidays and cooking for the very large gathering of family and friends.
